Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that lefts and liberals are responsible for the bitterness between Hindu and Muslims.

While speaking during the launch of a book on Veer Savarkar at Guwahati in Assam on Saturday, Sarma said also slammed Congress for allegedly 'amplifying' the 'bitterness' between the two religions for vote bank.

"Lefts and liberals are responsible for the bitterness between us (Hindu-Muslims). Congress extended it for vote bank. After independence, the left-liberals designed India's academic curriculum in a way that creates rebellion and inspires us to fight. They look for ways to destroy the honour of the country from the minds of the people,'' he added.

He also said that practicing religion is an academic activity to know oneself and it should not cause bloodshed among people in the country.

He further asserted that this bigotry was brought by the Left and Liberal people and then the Congress carried it forward for the sake of vote bank.

''The country was partitioned but that too did not help. Because not every Muslim went to Pakistan, they stayed here. Today there are more Muslims in India than in Islamic countries in the world,'' he added.

Sarma while discussing a book on Veer Savarkar in Guwahati delivered a 'powerful speech on the relevance of Savarkar in today's times'.

Taking to the micro-blogging site twitter, Uday Mahurkar, the author of the book on Veer Savarkar, said, ''Thank you Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma ji for discussing our book on Veer Savarkar in Guwahati and giving a speech about the relevance of Savarkar and the people. How the Left distorted our history and sowed the seeds of discontent among the people for their divisive purposes.'
